Each time I visit my blog in Xanga I get the dreaded Winfixer 2006 popping up and it's difficult to get rid of. I have used Xoftspy, Spy Sweeper and AdAware but none of them can trace it. My Antivir antivirus doesn't find it either.

Here is my Hijack This log in the hope that someone in here can help me clear it.

Hi spudgun,

I'd be happy to help you with your computer problem. I'll research your log and post back when I have developed a plan of attack.

Hi spudgun,

I don't see some lines I'd be expecting to see with WinFixer, let's do a little looking.

Update Ewido Anti-Malware.
1. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
2. The program will now open to the main screen.
3. Update Ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
4. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
5. Exit Ewido.
Do not scan with it yet.
(If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.)

------

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.

------

Note: You may want to print the following instructions.
Going to SAFE MODE
If you would like a complete discription, see here.

Reboot your computer
As soon as it starts to boot, rapidly press the f8 key. If this should get past you (as it is wont to do) just reboot, and try again.
Select Safe Mode from the menu.

Entering SAFE MODE
==========

  • Please run Ewido.
  • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
    • Click OK
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
  • Let it remove anything it finds.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit ewido

Reboot
==========

Exiting SAFE MODE

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt, the Ewido log and a new HiJackThis log.

Sorry but I forgot to say I used Vundofix.exe and that didn't find it either. However I installed and ran Spybot 1.4 and that HAS found Winfixer 2006 lol.

Trouble is I now have problems with that. It didn't make a backup of the nasties I removed after the scan, even though the 'make backup' Settings are all ticked.

This is the third installation of Spybot now in the hope that the backup feature will work. I never used to have this trouble with Spybot and don't know what is causing it now.

Just hope to god what I deleted yesterday - apart from Winfixer - are not things I will need again.

Did you run Ewido? Can you post the logs from VundoFix, Ewido and another HJT log?

Winfixer changed to WinAntiVirus Pro 2006

Unread postby spudgun » May 22nd, 2006, 8:43 am

Again logging onto Xanga and my blog I'm getting problems; this time with WinAntiVirus Pro 2006 which is warning me my computer is being infected with the backtera virus.

Again I have run scans with all my antispywares; AdAware, Spybot, Ewido, Spy Sweeper and the Vundoexe version 4.2 but this time to no avail.

Here is my HijackThis log and I'll run a Ewido scan too later on when I get back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. As yet my computer hasn't actuall crashed on me.

Touch wood :(

Spudgun,

There was a purpose that I had asked that the Ewido and Vundo logs be posted. They will provide me with information I need to evaluate your situtation and help devise a resolutation. Please post them.

Hi, Pollux.Castor,

I've just run a full scan in Ewido, nothing showed up, not even tracking cookies, and there was no report to view.

Same goes for Vundofix unless I'm not doing it right. I open Vundofix, click on 'Run as a task' , wait for the window to reappear then run a scan. But it always says nothing was found. And there is no report/log to view on there either.

I'm sorry if this isn't being very helpful but other than the hijackthis log file I don't know what else to provide you with!.

One other thing though; when I went to the Xanga website I clicked on View, Privacy Report and checked the cookies for privacy.Hardly any of them had Privacy policies. Not even Xanga. Is this alright?

Regards Spudgun

If I don't go to the Xanga website I don't get the dreaded WinAntiVirus Pro 2006 popup popping up. Maybe I'd better just stop using my blog.

Hi Spudgun,

Your log looks clean, let's work on keeping it that way.

You seem to be getting the popups from Xanga. If you need to continue using that site, the Google toolbar has a good popup blocker in it, go to Google >> More... >> Toolbar. Follow their installation instructions. It appears you are uninfected and are getting popups to encourage you to become infected. Winfixer and WinAntiVirus are know to produce false positives to goad people into buying them.

As you have antivirus and firewall installed, your Java is current, the related installation instructions (below) are included for informational purposes.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you are still having:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the OK button to apply the changes and exit the Internet Properties page.
  2. Use Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs (select and use only one):
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  5. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  6. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found above:
  7. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  8. Update Java - Download and install the newest version from here.
Then go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs.
Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
Click that entry and then click on the Uninstall button.
  9. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: So how did I get infected in the first place?

This is always a good read.
